The Faculty of Management Studies under the University of Calcutta is a premier management education institution in the country. The faculty was established in 1954. Since its inception, FMS has produced more than 10, 000 managers. Many of the alumni serve as directors, vice presidents and CEOs of reputed organizations in India as well as abroad. FMS is also known as the marketing campus of the country due to its reputation of providing exceptional quality of teaching in marketing specialization.
Facilities at FMS
Both the North and South Campus of the faculty are equipped with latest technology. Both are wi-fi enabled and connected through local area network (LAN). The institute has a computer for each candidate. All the computers have lasted software to facilitate better teaching. South Campus has an air conditioned library with more than 40,000 books, periodicals and journals. North Campus also has its own library. Besides these facilities students can also use the Delhi University library. Students can also use other facilities of the University or its colleges after getting approval from the concerned authority.
Programs offered
Faculty of Management Studies conducts undergraduate, post graduate and research programs in management. Recently, it has converted its part time program (taught in evening) into executive course for working professionals. The institute also offers an MBA- executive program in health care administration. MBA (Full time) is the flagship program of the institute.
Eligibility criteria for MBA (full time)
Candidates wishing to join this course must have passed undergraduate program with minimum percentage stream wise as stated below:
Medicine, Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics – 60%
Sciences – 55%
Arts, Commerce or Social Sciences – 50%
People who have completed master’s degree should have secured at least 60 % in the concerned course. Final year students can also apply for the course.
Selection process for the course
An aspirant for the program must appear for Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). CAT 2013 is will held during the exam window starting from 16th October to 11th November, 2013. Registration for the test has started from 5th August and will close on 24 September, 2013.
You have to separately apply to FMS. Applicants, who meet the minimum cut off score in CAT, as decided by the faculty, will be called for Group Discussion and Personal Interview stage. Candidates may also have to appear for extempore round where students are provided a topic and they will have to speak the subject.
Registration process and course fee
Registration process for the MBA (full time) course usually begins in second week of September and closes by the mid of December (per last year’s trend). MBA (full time) course is one of the cheapest management programs in the world. You just have to pay Rs 21,000 for the entire course.

Placement data are good indicator about the worth of a college. This gives an idea how much respect a concerned program or college enjoys in job market. Now coming to the placement data of FMS, students of the institute receives cool pay package and good profile. The average salary offered to the students passing out in 2013 was Rs. 16 LPA. 46 students received pre placement offers and 5 people opted out of placement process for starting their own venture or some other reasons.
As mentioned earlier many reputed firms recruited students for sales and marketing roles justifying its nickname as the Marketing Campus of India. Some recruiters that offered jobs in marketing profiles are HUL, Nestle, Coca Cola India, ITC, Johnson and Johnson, Asian Paints, Brittania, PEPSICO, Yum! Brands, Tata Steel etc. ITC offered jobs to 11 students. The institute also hosted companies from media and telecom sectors. Network18, Times, HT Media, Vodafone and Airtel are some of the big names from the sectors.

Getting into the FMS is not an easy task. You have to score high (read 98+ percentile) in CAT. Besides, you also have to perform exceptionally in the GD and PI stage to be a part of this elite institution. With hard work and dedication nothing is impossible.
