Things You Shouldn’t Include in Your MBA Application Essays

Students studying to appear for entrance to courses in MBA have to attempt a compulsory essay section. The essay is treated as a reflection of your ability with regard to clarity of thought and clarity in speech. It is extremely important that your write up is informative, simple; honest and an excellent read.

Whatever you write, you must be extra careful before making untrue claims about ‘unique experiences’.  Unfortunately, at times candidates make false claims about an institution, school or place that may not actually be true and expose the fact that you haven’t done your homework. That has a very negative impact on the psyche of the examiner.

Avoid beginning your write up with meaningless or prosaic statements. It is advisable to write about a genuine personal experience. Having said that, you must take ownership of your story and naturally your write up will exude the confidence of an original. A lot likely to impress the examiners!

You must avoid beginning too many sentences with ‘I’ and make sure you do not use vague abbreviations such as ‘etc.’ and ‘et al’ too often in a 600 word essay. It reflects negatively on your ability to explain a concept in concrete terms.  Terms such as ‘etc.’ trivialize the issue you are discussing.

Steer clear from making personal statements that come across as extremely arrogant to the reader. If you have to mention something then you must take a diplomatic approach to it.
